Marie-Noëlle Albert

Thinking with Edgar Morin

For Marie-Noëlle Albert, the paradigm of complexity is not an ornamental reference. It is an explicit pivot: she mobilizes its operators by name, she co-edited an entire thematic issue devoted to it, and she belongs to the international network that spreads this thinking.

The practical consequence is easy to state and hard to hold: simple answers to complex problems are refused, including when they are convenient.

The operators

Three words that do the work

These notions come from Edgar Morin. What is her own is to make them work on objects of management — engagement, diversity, solidarity, artificial intelligence.
Dialogic
Holding together two logics that oppose one another without sacrificing either. Cooperation and competition, rationality and irrationality: the dialogic refuses to decide where reality does not decide.
Recursion
What is produced in turn produces what produced it. Engagement feeds recognition, which feeds engagement; the knowledge built transforms the experience it came from.
Ingenium
The faculty of inventing a new relation between distant things — as opposed to engineering, which applies a procedure. A word she uses in the very title of a 2020 article.

The network

Reliance en Complexité

A transdisciplinary scholarly network devoted to spreading Edgar Morin’s complexity thinking, born of a meeting between Edgar Morin and Régis Meissonier in March 2019. Marie-Noëlle Albert is listed by name among the network’s members; the network devoted a video portrait to her.

  • March 2019A meeting between Edgar Morin and Régis Meissonier, at the origin of the network
  • 1 October 2019First meeting
  • 28 June 2022First session of the Université Populaire Edgar Morin, with Edgar Morin
  • November 2022Incorporation as an association

A distinction that matters

A member — not a founding member. The network calls its members “reliantes” and “reliants”.

The founding members are Edgar Morin, Jean-Louis Le Moigne, Roland Pérez, Philippe Guiliani, Stéphane Guilbert and some twenty other researchers. Marie-Noëlle Albert is listed among the members of the network, as is her colleague Nadia Lazzari Dodeler. This site therefore never presents her as a founder.

A further distinction

The word reliance appears in the name of the network, and in the title of one of her 2021 articles. No publication in her corpus is, however, devoted to the concept of reliance as such.

Her contributions

What she has produced there

Bulletins taken up in a collective book, a co-edited thematic issue, and a video portrait.

Bulletins and collective book

Both texts are taken up in Éditoriaux en pensée complexe, the collective book of the network published by L’Harmattan in 2023.

These bulletins are co-written: the full list of co-authors and their exact year remain to be confirmed.

Thematic issue

Edgar Morin et le paradigme de la complexité

Revue Interventions économiques / Papers in Political Economy, n° 69 — co-edited with Nadia Lazzari Dodeler and Diane-Gabrielle Tremblay (TÉLUQ).

The opening text of the issue, Simplicité et complexité des crises à la lumière du paradigme de la complexité d'Edgar Morin, applies the paradigm to contemporary crises. It is in open access.Published in French; the publisher’s English title is “Simplicity and Complexity of Crises in the Context of the Paradigm of Complexity of Edgar Morin”.

Video portrait

Portrait of a “reliante” — Marie-Noëlle Albert

A video portrait produced by the Reliance en Complexité network, in which Marie-Noëlle Albert presents her thinking in her own words. It is the most substantial audiovisual document available about her.
