Summary written for this site

The starting point of the entire architecture. Nearly sixty semi-structured interviews conducted in four stores of a group of independent retailers, supplemented by observations and documents. The thesis builds a four-phase framework — research design, empirical collection, construction of local knowledge, then construction and dissemination of generic knowledge — and already sets out what will run through the later work: the "self" is relational; internal and external commitment reinforce each other recursively; recognition and the meaning given to work prevent disengagement.

Written for this site from the title, from the text where it is accessible, and from the sources listed below. It is not the official abstract of the publication.
